Botox vs Restylane vs Collagen

One of the most common questions asked when a new client visits a non-surgical cosmetic treatment clinic is this:

“Which one of these—Botox, Restylane or collagen— is most effective at reducing wrinkles and lines?”

To find out the answer, we need to first look at how each of these cosmetic treatments work.

Botox injections work by temporarily paralysing the treated muscles, be it on the forehead, between the eyebrows or around the eyes.

Restylane, on the other hand, consists of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance found in our body. Restylane works as a dermal filler, which means that it fills up the creases that make up the wrinkles.

Collagen works just like Restylane, but is slowly disappearing from the market for the purpose of wrinkle removal because its effect is shorter than the latest dermal fillers like Restylane, Hydrafill, Radiesse and Laresse.

So it boils down to Botox vs Restylane. There are no hard and fast rules, but each of these non-surgical injectable procedures are better than the other in certain situations:

  • Botox treatments are usually reserved for the top/ upper half of the face, e.g. forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, etc.
  • Restylane is preferred over Botox for treating the lower half of the face, e.g. deep nasolabial folds and perioral wrinkles.
  • Sometimes both treatments are used together. For example, a cosmetic doctor might inject Botox into your forehead to relax the muscle, but there are still some residual wrinkle that has accumulated over the years. In this case, the doctor would fill up those wrinkles with Restylane or another dermal filler of choice.

I hope this short article clears up the confusion over the difference between Botox vs Restylane somewhat.
